5 key things to consider about your domain name before building a new website

- Keep it as simple as possible and importantly, easy to spell. There is more chance it will be remembered. Make sure to use a domain name extension that is relevant, so if you are setting up a not-for-profit in Ipswich for example, consider a org.au extension instead of .com.au. Extra tip: Avoid using numbers or hyphens as these might be harder for some people to remember.
- Make it memorable: Think of a name that is relevant to your industry or service, but catchy enough that it will be remembered.
- Avoid names that don’t mean anything: Choose a name that expresses meaning so potential customers know what your business is all about! Larger companies can use nearly any name they like as they often have the large budgets to brand appropriately. This is often different for small business.
- Once you have a name, research further. You want to make sure there are no similar websites with the same or very similar names. Also consider new rules in Australia around domain names. Visit auda.org.au to learn more.
- Is it scalable? While you may be starting locally, do you have plans to expand? Naming your business after your city or suburb is great in the beginning if that is your core focus, but if you have growth plans, you’ll want to drop any super local references in the name if you are going setup in other geographic locations.
