Personal branding: It's the perfect time to take a fresh look at yourself, what you want to do and to let people know about it.
Coronavirus and the economy
You've read the headlines, watched the news or scrolled through the endless posts - and there is no escaping it. It's tough out there for business, and when it's tough for business, it's tough for job seekers. However, I'd argue it's not all doom and gloom and tough times can present previously unthought of opportunity.
Have more time? Time to invest in yourself
To cut a long story short you have either been impacted yourself by the current economic circumstances or know someone in your wider circles who has. While some will struggle to adapt, those who are willing to embrace change and explore options will ultimately have a greater chance of navigating the times ahead.
If you find yourself with more time, either from working at home and no longer having the commute, your hours have shrunk or you're looking for new opportunities due to circumstances outside of your control then consider some of the following steps you can take to maximise options moving forward,
If you have more time on your hands then avoid reinvesting it into additional Netflix or similar activities - well at least a portion of it...
It's a great opportunity to upskill in your field or learn a completely new skill. Perhaps you've always wanted to master a new piece of software, learn more about a new topic or start something completely new. By reinvesting those new found hours incrementally into a new goal, you'll have that new qualification or skill under your belt before you know it.
Great secondary skills to have regardless of industry or seniority include leadership studies, management and project management.
Also look to mastering common software applications that are widely used across your industry. The days of 'I don't how to use xyz' are certainly over - it's expected that if you do not know, you'll learn.
There are also some great short courses from tertiary providers that can get you started and help build that sense of achievement.
While social media is a force to be reckoned with, you should also think about your very own digital space.
A personal website or blog can be a powerful tool to show the world your achievements, experience and more. It stands out. There are plenty of choices out there and once you secure your own domain, make sure to also create an email address to match. You can ditch the @gmail or @outlook generic addresses and create a professional look with leading providers for a small monthly fee using the same familiar products.
If you find yourself with more time think about applying your skills to a not-for-profit or other volunteering entity. It's a great way to give back to your community and the experience could open doors you previously didn’t know existed; be it professional, social or otherwise.
Your options could be anything from volunteering with a local organisation to volunteering on a board or steering committee. Find something that aligns with your interests and start from there.
